As disturbing as it might be – this was a recent story on a national news website! You’ll start finding them in the toilet, under the fridge or on the verandah, as snakes come out of hibernation. Keen to learn the right way to deal with snakes, a group of brave souls signed up for a snake handling course at Karratha TAFE in WA’s Pilbara region. Course instructor Peter Anyon says it’s important to use the right equipment. “Not to do it with the proper tools is not a wise thing to do”, he says. “You can use a broom and pin them, but because a broom head is so wide you can’t see where the snake’s head is and things like that. It’s like any job – unless you’ve got the right tools, you’ll make a mess of it”. (“A mess of it” means you might end up dead)!
