Day 5 – June 6 by Mitchel
Here’s a special message for our Dad:
Well – today we just relaxed on the beach and watched the local fishermen try and catch fish.
Every Sunday, Palm Cove has like a shopping area up and down the beach front so we walked along and looked at the really expensive art; other things were kind of interesting though. We then made our way down to the pier to watch the fishermen. Nothing was caught while we were there but plenty of strange stories were told. One old guy started telling about this Osprey which is a bird, they had trained to eat fish from their hand, but the bird was wild. I wasn’t sure how true that was until Ian actually got to feed the bird. It landed on top of the light pole and the old man handed Ian a glove and a baby fish, sure enough the bird swooped down and took the fish from his hand. It was really amazing.
Next we decided to try the boogie board and well it was fun but the waves weren’t huge by any means. We still made it fun even on the small waves and salt water that regularly slipped into your mouth. The boogie board made for some really good and funny pictures. That basically wrapped up the day chillin on the beach.
Day 6 – June 7 by Mitchel & Ian Another amazing day in Australia!
We were awake by seven, ready to head for the train station. We went to Kuranda which is located on top of a mountain. A train took us to the top stopping along the way, for some really good photos.
The ride took about an hour and fifteen minutes but was well worth it, the view was awesome.
Kuranda is actually a town on top of the mountain so as we arrived, we had lunch up there but then headed for the sky rail.
Yes a sky rail running from the top of the mountain the bottom! Think of it as a more enclosed ski lift and that is what we were on. Towering over the rain forest with an amazing view below, I can’t say I weren’t a wee bit scared, truthfully I was.
As the ride went along ground got closer and closer and I realized I wasn’t going to fall from the sky rail. We then boarded a bus and headed for Hartley’s Crocodile farm.
The farm had tons of crocs as well as koala bears, wombats, kangaroos and snakes but I wasn’t too interested in them. Ian’s turn – Neither was I. The guy had the deadliest snake in the world – an Inland Taipan, so I was just thinking you stay there and I’ll stay here and everything will be OK. And of course – there was a few crying babies but none got too out of hand. After the snake show, we went on a boat ride where we saw crocs up close – it was cool.
Our boat driver even gave them some treats, so they jumped up close to the boat. They’re big and look fat but they are extremely quick. The boat ride didn’t last long so then we went to the Crocodile Attack Show. This was the best event of the day in my mind. A guy got down in a cage with a croc, where he did several different things with the croc. Like show us how they creep up out of the water and look at you. But you may not even know that they’re there. He also showed us how they grab their food and roll with it. That was cool.
After this we just walked around and looked at the different animals, such as wallabies, snakes, crocs, and lizards. By the way – wallabies are like mini kangaroos. If you check the picts out you’ll see we got to pet them and feed them.
That pretty much wraps up the croc farm. When we got home we got changed and went out to eat on the beach front. We ate at a fairly nice restaurant, where Mitch and I had steak, a gratin potatoes and mushy peas. It was very good. We ate and talked for quite awhile. Then we had dessert, I had lemon tart which was different then my usual desserts but good. And that’s our day, very full and fun.
